Heart frame with cartoon character and flowers

Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo

A colour tattoo shows a cartoon character with spiky blond hair inside a gold-edged heart frame, tied with a large pink bow. Dark purple plumeria flowers, green monstera-style leaves, red blossoms and small sparkles surround the frame, with soft purple shading behind. Bold black outlines and saturated inks give it a bright, graphic finish.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dessie Pugh had rigged the claw machine at the end of Weston pier for eleven summers, and in all that time the only prize it ever dropped was a plastic heart frame with a cartoon boy inside, tied with a pink bow that looked like it had come off a Christmas parcel. Nobody wanted it. Everybody took it home anyway, because the claw always closed on the bow and the bow always got stuck, and a person could only walk away from that so many times.

The summer Lorraine turned sixteen she won four of them in a row and lined them along the sill of the chip shop flat above the arcade. Each one had a sprig of hibiscus from the market stall tucked behind the glass, because her mum said bare plastic looked like a dentist's waiting room. The green leaves went yellow in the sea damp and the purple blooms faded to the colour of plums, and Dessie watched the whole display from his deckchair with his hands folded over his belly, certain he was being robbed one quarter at a time.

On the last Saturday of August she came down the steps with a fifth frame under her arm and a face like a dropped chip. 'Keep your claw,' she said. 'I've got what I came for.' She held the thing up against the sun, and through the teal glass the boy's spiky hair lit up like a row of tiny birthday candles.

Dessie looked at it for a long time. Then he reached under the counter, pulled out the spare bow he had been saving since 1987, and stuck it on the machine's glass with two strips of parcel tape.
