Cartoon winged dragon on a calf
Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo
A cartoon dragon with a grey body, teal wing and frill, and a open-mouthed expression sits in front of a pink cloud-shaped backdrop. Bold black outlines and cream highlights define the forms, with soft grey shading across the body and wings. The design is centred on the skin, with the creature angled diagonally and the cloud framing it on all sides.

Mind the fire, you lot, and keep your boots off the hearth, because this is the bit where the dragon comes down out of the cloud and makes a nuisance of himself. His name was Pock, and he was grey as wet slate, with a teal frill he flicked whenever he was pleased with himself, which was often. He lived on a cloud the colour of raspberry fool above the Hollin pass, and for a hundred winters he never once came down to the valley.

Then came the winter the snow piled up so deep the road vanished, and the cloud sank low enough to snag on the chimney of the Three Hares inn. Agnes Quill, who kept the place and had a bread oven and a grudge against draughts, heard a scrabbling in her flue at midnight. Out tumbled Pock, sooty and cross, with his wings folded like a fan and his open mouth full of complaints. He sneezed a black cloud over the cheese and then grinned at her, showing one crooked tooth, as if the whole mess were her fault.
Agnes wanted him out. Pock wanted the warmest seat by the hearth and the last heel of the loaf. They struck a bargain over a bowl of barley broth: he would clear the lane to the village if he could stay until spring. So he flapped and flapped, wings beating the drifts into powder, and by morning the road was black and clean, and the cloud over the pass had turned a shade pinker with pride.
Some say the cloud never left the chimney pot. Others say Agnes baked him a pie every Christmas and scratched his name into the crust in burnt sugar, which is why nobody in Hollin ever eats the crust first.
