Cartoon bee tattoo on a foot
Other · Mixed · Photo
A small cartoon bee with a yellow and black striped body, dark wings and a curled antenna sits on the top of a foot, facing right. A trail of small dark dots leads towards it from the left, across the skin. The tattoo is shown against a pale skin tone and a cream towel, with bold outlines and flat colour fills.

Nobody on the fourteenth floor of Brackenwood House believed Mrs Okonedo when she said the bee had come up the stairs. The lift had been broken since March, so everyone walked, and everyone saw the little dots of spilt sugar on the concrete, one every few treads, going up past the bins and the noticeboard about the bins. Her grandson said it was ants. Her neighbour said it was the caretaker's cat, which was not allowed.

She followed the dots anyway, one hand on the rail and a carrier bag of oranges in the other. On the landing outside flat 14 the trail stopped at a smear of yellow fur on the mat. The bee sat on the doorstep as if it had paid the rent. One antenna was curled like a question mark, and it looked at her with the patience of something that has come a long way in its own time.
Her mother used to say that a bee which climbs forty flights is looking for a particular door. Mrs Okonedo had kept hives on the allotments before the estate went up. She had left a jar of honey with old Mr Pryce at the corner shop, and he had died in the winter, and nobody had thought to tell the bees. She set the oranges down, and the bee climbed onto her thumb without any fuss. She carried it inside and put it on the windowsill, where the afternoon sun came in over the car park.
The next morning there were dots on the sill, small and dark, leading out through the gap she had left open. She left the window open a finger's width after that. Each day there were a few more dots, and each day she followed them down the forty flights and out across the car park to the patch of sunflowers behind the bins, where the bee went in among the heads and did not come out again.
