Small heart tattoos on feet
Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
Three bare feet rest on a black leather surface, each with a small heart tattoo along the outer edge near the little toes. The hearts are filled in red and one appears in dark grey, drawn with clean, fine linework. A cursive script tattoo and a partial outline ring sit on the top of the ankles, and the toenails are painted in purple, pink and red.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mrs Tully kept her brass punches in a cigar box under the bench, and on the Friday before Whitsun she let her nephew Dennis pick the heart stamp out of the tray himself. "Not that one, the little one," she said. "A heart the size of a barley grain. Nobody looks at the outside edge of a sole."

Dennis had swept the shop for a year and thought he knew everything about leather. He could tell grain side from flesh side, and he knew calfskin wanted a week of neatsfoot oil before it would bend. What he did not understand was why his aunt spent an hour each Sunday with the lasts, easing each pair so the outer edge sat a finger's width wider than the pattern said it should.
"Room to walk," she told him when he asked. "And room for a ring to slide on, if somebody's getting married in a hurry."
The shoes went out on the Monday coach, eleven pairs for the Fenwick sisters, who had a dance at the Assembly Rooms. Dennis carried the last box to the coach himself. Only later did he notice that she had stamped a grey heart on the pair meant for the eldest Fenwick girl, the widow, who had not yet decided whether to marry the miller. The red hearts were for the others. Mrs Tully wiped her hands on her apron and said nothing about it, and the bench was swept clean by dark.
