Cartoon bee tattoo on a foot
Other · Colour · Photo
A small cartoon bee with antennae sits on the skin of a foot, with toes visible at the left edge of the frame. The bee has a bold black outline, yellow and black striped body and pale blue wings with simple shading. The plain skin background and soft lighting keep the tattoo as the clear focus.

Come closer, you with the sticky fingers, and mind the candyfloss. This is the tale of Ada Buzzwick, the smallest bee on Thornley Common, who had been told all her life that she was too small for anything worth doing. Her mother said so. The wasps said so. The old tortoise who ran the lost property tent said so, and he was never wrong about anything except the time of day.

Then the fair came rolling into the far field one wet Tuesday, with its painted caravans and its great striped tent, and Ada saw the big wheel turning slow against the clouds. Every bee in the hive wanted to ride it. Nobody thought a bee so small could be allowed a ticket. So Ada hid in the sleeve of a candy man's jacket, rode in the cone of his barrow, and climbed into the very top basket of the wheel while the operator was busy counting pennies.
From up there the whole county looked like a jam jar of gold and green. She sat very still, and when the wheel stopped at the highest point, she unfolded her pale blue wings and, for the first time in her life, flew down under her own power, straight over the dodgems and into the hive, where her mother was waiting with her arms folded and a look that was almost a smile.
"Well," said her mother. "I suppose you're not too small after all."
Ada was the proudest bee in Thornley, and she never once let anyone forget it.
