Cartoon blue bird with teal ribbon

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a stylised cartoon bird with a blue body, pale pink and grey shading, and a yellow beak, holding a long teal ribbon in its beak. Bold black outlines define the bird and ribbon, with soft gradient shading across the feathers and body. The bird is shown in profile against the skin, with the ribbon trailing down and to the left of the frame, and the photo is cropped tightly around the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ribbon had been tied to the wrong bird, and the whole of Corran Hill knew it before the bird did. Old Ysolde's granddaughter, Pell, had spun the teal thread from the last good fibre the orchard-domes still grew, and she had meant it for the crow that came every spring to pick at the seed-racks. Instead the blue bird took it. It came down from the water-tower with the ribbon in its beak, trailing behind like a dropped line, and it did not look sorry.

The council sent a boy up the ladder to take it back. The bird let him come close, tilted its head, and flew off to the north wall where an old dish lay on its back in the grass. Pell followed, because someone had to. She found the bird on the rim, the ribbon looped through the broken struts, and the bird watching her the way the foxes watched the coops, as if it had already decided what she would say.

'You can keep it,' she said, which was not what she had come to say. The bird hopped down, shook out its wings, and walked off in the stiff, comic way of a creature that had always known it was being looked at. Behind it the ribbon slid free of the struts and streamed across the dead field in a long teal line, pointing towards the sea nobody had seen in forty years.

That spring the crow went hungry and the seed-racks stood untouched. By the first frost a thread of teal had been found wound round the gate latch at the bottom of the hill, and then another at the ford, and the children said it ran all the way to the water. The children were never wrong about where a bird had gone.
