Swallow with thread and needle on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A blue swallow with outstretched wings, a red breast and a yellow beak is shown in bold, solid colour with dark outlines. A fine black line of thread loops from the bird's beak to a grey spool with a needle, creating a flowing composition across the skin. The photograph is taken straight on under even light, with the tattoo sitting against pale, freckled skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had been fighting the cratch cover since the lock keeper's boy shouted across the water that the rain was coming in sideways. Her fingers had gone numb, the needle slid twice off the wet canvas, and the swallow that had nested under the gunwale all spring came down out of the willows as if it had been waiting for her to make a mess of things.

It landed on the rail, tipped its blue head at her, and took the end of the dark thread from the spool between her boots. Nell had never known a bird could hold thread. It bent the line in its beak the way a seamstress bites off a knot, then lifted away, trailing the cotton in a long loop back over the cut. Her father used to say swallows stitched the sky shut behind the summer. She had always taken it for a thing you said to children.

She followed the line. It ran along the top of the cabin, down past the stern, through the eye of the old needle he had left stuck in the tiller board, and the bird was there, waiting, wings spread wide. Together they pulled the canvas tight across the hatch, the swallow darting through each gap while the cotton drew taut and hummed. By the time the first hard drops hit the roof, the hatch was sealed and the bilge was dry.

When the rain eased she unwound what was left on the spool and found it empty, the last of the thread gone into the seam. The swallow sat on the mooring post, preening its wing. "Not bad," Nell told it, and it flew off towards Thame without a backward look, leaving the boat quiet for the first time since Easter.
