Cartoon breakfast characters on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Four small cartoon breakfast characters sit in a diagonal line down the forearm: a strip of bacon, a fried egg with a yellow yolk, a slice of toast and a grey-green item. Each figure has a simple face and stick legs, drawn in thin dark outlines. Flat fills in red-brown, white, yellow, orange and teal-grey sit against bare skin, with a dark sleeve at the edge of the frame.

Nobody noticed the fry-up walking out of the back kitchen at twenty to six, which was just as well, because I was the one who had put them on the pan and I already had enough explaining to do. The bacon went first, flat and sulky, dragging one leg as if it had been up all night. Then the egg, bright-eyed and wobbling. Then the toast, who would not stop apologising for the scorched corner. I followed them down the back step with the spatula still in my hand.

They were headed for the allotments, where Mr Oduya kept his leeks in rows so straight you could rule a ledger by them. The grey-green thing, which had been a sprout once and had never quite forgiven the grill, brought up the rear and said nothing at all, which in a sprout is a kind of courage.
At the gate they stopped. The egg looked back at me, yolk trembling, and I understood it wanted a reason. So I told it the truth: the café had been a bad idea from the start, and four plates of breakfast had never been meant to spend their lives being ordered by people in a hurry. Toast nodded. Bacon sighed. Nobody argued.
Then the sun came up over the hedge and the four of them went down the lane in a diagonal line, shortest to tallest, like a school trip that had decided to skip school. I went back inside, turned the sign to Open, and cut myself a slice of bread into the shape of a little man with legs. I ate it standing at the window, watching the lane long after there was nothing left to see.
