Cartoon character behind the ear

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small black linework tattoo of a cartoon character with round glasses, a wide smile, a striped tie and a tufted hat or hair shape sits behind the ear. The lines are single weight and clean, with no shading beyond solid black areas in the hair and tie. The photo is a close side view of the ear and dark hair, with the tattoo centred in the lower right of the frame.

Everyone on the market knew him. Nobody knew his name. He turned up every wet Saturday with round spectacles steamed over, a scarf wound twice around his neck and a tie that looked pulled from a barber's pole. He never bought anything. He just wandered the aisles peering into sacks of potatoes as though one of them owed him money.

Last month the council man came with a clipboard and a damp spaniel, and the hat vanished between the cabbage crates and the tombola. We searched for an hour. Mrs Okafor swore he had sneaked into the back of the chip van. The chip man swore nothing had moved. I found him at closing time, folded small under a tarpaulin behind the bric-a-brac, grinning as if he had won the raffle.

I said nothing. I left a bag of day-old bread on his crate, and the next Saturday the hat came bobbing back past the fishmonger. It stopped by my stall, tipped itself towards me, and went on into the rain.
