Butterfly tattoo behind the ear
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small butterfly outline sits on the neck behind the ear, with its wings drawn in black line and filled with curling scroll-like swirls. The linework is clean and even, with a dark, tapered body at the centre. The close photograph shows skin tones and dark hair at the right edge, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

Her grandmother had said that a wing wants a curl at its heart, a coil of breath that keeps it from falling. So Ottilie worked scrolls into the wing edges, tight spirals that opened like fiddleheads, and at the centre she pinched the silk into a dark taper, thick as a stroke of ink, the only solid thing in all that lace.
The Duke's man would not wait. He carried the veil in its box of pale paper up the hill in the rain, and Ottilie followed without a cloak, because she had a certainty that the thing would lose its shape in damp air unless someone kept watch over it.
At the palace gate the guard unfolded the veil and the wind took it. The butterfly lifted off the silk, turned once above the cobbles, and settled on the iron rail as though it had always meant to stop there. Nobody spoke. Ottilie kept her hands folded inside her sleeves and watched the black body tremble, steady, and hold.
