Small cat silhouette behind the ear

Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small solid black silhouette of a seated cat with a curled tail sits on the skin behind the ear. The tattoo is filled with flat black ink with no visible shading or linework detail, and the image is greyscale. The composition is a close crop of the ear and hair, with the tattoo placed to the left of the ear against a plain light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cat came up the lane every evening the week the snow stopped, and every evening my father swore it was the same one that had drowned in the water butt in October. The cat always met me at the gate, sat down square on the top rail and waited.

It was black all over, or it looked it. I never got close enough to see its face. The sky behind it was the colour of pewter and the snow threw back what little light there was, so the cat was only ever a shape, a neat seated outline with its tail curled round its feet like a question mark somebody had forgotten to finish. I tried to bring it nearer once with a saucer of milk. It sat on the rail and let the milk go cold.

On the last night of February the lamp blew out in the wind before I reached the shed. I stood in the dark with my hands going numb, and then I saw the cat, cut out against the yard light spilling from the kitchen door. Dad was standing in that doorway with his back to me. The cat's outline sat exactly where his shoulder met the frame, and for a moment I couldn't tell which of them was watching the other.

I found the matches in my coat and got the lamp lit. When I looked up the rail was bare. Dad said nothing about the cat, and I said nothing about the milk, and we went in to our tea with the snow starting again behind us.
