Small cat silhouette behind the ear
Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a tiny, solid black silhouette of a sitting cat with its tail curled beside it, placed on the skin just behind the ear. The photograph is black and white and close up, with dark hair visible on the left and the ear taking up the right side of the frame. The silhouette is filled with no visible internal linework or shading, and it sits small against an otherwise plain area of skin.

The cat arrived the week the Lyric on Argyle Street shut its doors for good, and by the third night it had taken the sill above the stage door as its own. Nobody fed it. I brought a saucer of milk out of habit from the bakery where I'd worked before the cleaning contract, and every night at half eleven I'd find it sitting exactly where I had left it, back straight, tail curled round its feet like a full stop.

It never came closer than the bottom step. I started talking to it while I mopped the foyer, the way you talk to a radio left on in another room. I told it about my sister in Paisley who wouldn't speak to me over a dispute about a kettle, and about the man on the late bus who counted his coins twice before paying. The cat listened the way the stone lions outside the City Chambers listen, with no obligation to answer.
In February the council sent men with hoardings, and the building was to be gutted by spring. On the last night I carried out the saucer, empty, and found the cat not on the sill but on the wet pavement under the lamp, sitting square to the road as if waiting for a bus that had stopped running years ago. I crouched beside it. It didn't look at me. It looked at the empty street, perfectly still, the way a shape cut from black card holds its pose.
I put the saucer on my own back step that night, filled it, and left the door ajar. In the morning there was a small dark shape on the flagstones, tail curled, facing the road.
