Cartoon character flash sheet with roses and banners
Traditional · Colour · Flash
A flash sheet showing four cartoon characters, each with a scroll banner carrying short lettering, plus a large red rose with green leaves at the bottom and pink flowers beside one character. The linework is bold and dark, with flat colour fills and small blue highlights behind the heads. The elements are arranged in loose clusters across the page, with the rose as the largest focal point.

The flash sheet came through my lane at Dover on a Tuesday, rolled in a cardboard tube, and I nearly sent it back for looking like a prank. Four cartoon men in a row, grinning like they'd just been let out of a pub. One in a pale shirt, one in a cowboy hat tipped over one eye, one in a cap with a crest, and a big red rose across the bottom as if the whole thing needed a wreath.

The officer across from me, Priya Okonedo-Lamb, who has never once laughed at a customs form, put her finger on the banner under the cap man and read the lettering out loud. Substitute teacher of the year, nineteen ninety-six. Who writes that on a rose? I told her the artist had clearly been waiting years for someone to ask. She did not find that funny. I found it funny enough for both of us, and she gave me the look she keeps for people who think they're charming.
The paperwork said the sheet was for personal use only, and that the designs were to be inked onto a single client in a studio in Margate. Priya asked how a man could possibly want four cartoon neighbours and a rose on one arm, and I said the rose was the sensible bit, the rest was just company. She turned the page over, checked the back for anything written in biro, found nothing, and reached for her stamp.
She pressed it down with a sound like a small door closing. Then she tore the corner off a spare form, drew a rose on it with a blue pen, and asked, very seriously, whether it could be done a little smaller, for her mum.
