Cartoon character sleeve on an arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A woman in a purple dress shows a full sleeve tattoo of cartoon characters that runs from the upper arm to the wrist. The figures are rendered with bold outlines and flat fills, set among small motifs and green shading. Ink is mostly pink, yellow, orange and green, with the image framed against a pale wall and a dark handbag at the right.

The cat came off the milk train at Hollin Bridge with a ribbon of paper flowers knotted round her neck, and nobody on the platform could say whose she was. Ada Pyle, who had the porter's job that year and no wish for a pet, fed her a saucer of tinned pilchards to be civil, and by the next morning the cat was sitting on the ticket counter as though she had bought the place.

They called her Marigold for the yellow on her, though Ada said the green along her back was the colour of the signal lamps and that was the proper name. Children from the school walked down after lessons to draw her. The stationmaster's boy painted orange petals along the waiting room bench, and the cat sat on them and was not at all embarrassed.
In the hard winter she began to walk the line. Each evening she went out past the water tower to the level crossing and sat down on the sleeper nearest the gate, and each time she did, the next train was late. Ada stopped minding after the third time. She wrote the cat's hours in chalk on the board, under the departures, and the drivers read them and slowed for the bend without being asked.
The last thing anyone remembers is the spring the cat did not come back from the crossing. Ada went out with the lamp and found her curled on the sleeper, facing the rails, her paper ribbon bright in the wet. The eight-fifteen came through on time that night, and Ada wrote nothing on the board at all.
