Cartoon character with Peace Among Worlds banner
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A black ink line drawing on grey paper shows a spiky-haired cartoon character with antennae, pointing up with both middle fingers. The character rises from a scroll of three stacked banners that read PEACE AMONG WORLDS in bold outlined lettering. The linework is uniform and bold, with no shading or colour, and the design is centred on a plain background.

The stock had been simmering since four when the pot began to hum, and Agnes Kerr, who had cooked on the Halden Rose for nineteen years, lifted the lid to find a head looking back at her. It had a fringe of wild grey hair, two bobbing wire antennae with a little ball on each tip, and the eyes of a man who had not slept since the last war. It rose out of the broth on a scroll of paper that unrolled as it climbed, three bands deep, and the bands read PEACE AMONG WORLDS in letters as thick as rope.

"Don't touch my ladle," it said. "I'm from the far side of the Shetland gap and I'm on a schedule." It had come through the galley vent, it said, chasing a loose portal-spark that had gone into the tinned peaches. Agnes had counted those tins twice that week. She folded her arms and waited, because nineteen years on a coaster teaches a cook that the one who speaks first has already lost the argument.
It raised both arms and aimed two stiff fingers at the porthole, then swung them round at her, grinning. "Universal salute," it explained. "Means peace." Agnes told it that where she came from it meant the other thing, and that the gulls on the foredeck would understand it better than she did.
The creature laughed so hard the scroll curled over its head. Then it dived back into the stock with a noise like a drain emptying, and the spark went out with it. In the morning the peaches were all there, every tin, and the broth tasted of something faintly electric. Agnes ladled it out for the crew and kept the lid on from then on.
