The lock-keeper at Hythe has finally put a sign on the gate saying the towpath is closed to dogs, bicycles and, in his words, 'that woman on the boat with the hat', which I'm choosing to take as a compliment. I've had the Mabel tied up below the weir since Tuesday, sulking over a cracked rudder and a sack of mouldy onions Pete Ferris swore were fresh. Nobody on this stretch of the Kennet has ever sold a decent onion.

You wanted me to say sorry for the business with the stove. I won't. You left the paraffin tin next to the flame and then stood in the wheelhouse blaming the wind. The cabin still smells of it, and every time the kettle starts to sing I think of your face going red as a pillar box.

So here is my offer. Mum's ashes are in the blue biscuit tin above the bunk, the one with the Scottie dog on the lid. You can have them on Sunday if you bring a proper onion and stop sending the lawyer. Leave the van at the top of the lock and walk down. I'll be on the roof with a flask, wearing the hat you hate.
