Cartoon woman with pizza and blue flowers on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

A cartoon woman with a black bob and red jacket holds a slice of pizza with a mildly unimpressed expression. She is framed by two blue flowers with yellow centres, and a yellow banner across the bottom reads EAT PIZZA AND COMPLAIN. Bold black outlines and flat, saturated fills in red, blue, yellow and skin tones give the piece a classic flash look, photographed against a pink fabric background.

The ferry was late again, which meant the mozzarella was late, which meant Nell Tranter had been standing in the doorway of the Gull Street bakehouse since six, arms folded, pretending the wind off the harbour did not bother her. On Inishgarry, nothing arrived on time except the fog.

The only pizza oven on the island belonged to Dessie Maclean, who had built it from an old boiler drum and two sheets of corrugated iron. He sang while he stretched the dough and never once looked up when Nell complained. 'Eat it hot or don't eat it,' he said, sliding a pie onto the board. 'The sea doesn't care what you think of the cheese.'

She ate it on the sea wall, a slice folded in half, watching the mailboat grind toward the pier with its single crate of tinned tomatoes. The pizza was perfect and she told him so, which she had never done before, and then spent ten minutes listing everything wrong with the crust. Dessie laughed until he coughed.

The next morning she painted the sign herself, in the red and blue and that particular yellow Dessie's late mother had used on the bus shelter. Under the window, where customers would read it before they ordered, she lettered the words in capitals: EAT PIZZA AND COMPLAIN. The ferry came in on time that day, which Dessie said was a sign, and Nell said it was a coincidence, then took the first slice out of the box before the lid was properly shut.
