Cartoon face with hat and sunglasses on upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black line drawing of a stylised male face wearing a brimmed hat and dark sunglasses, with a moustache and a simple expression. The linework is bold and uniform with minimal shading, and the design is entirely black ink. The tattoo sits centrally on the outer upper arm against a plain background, with a black top and white bra strap visible at the edge of the frame.

The rain had been coming sideways across Margate pier for three days when Mr Okonedo's umbrella stall finally sold out of everything except the bright yellow ones nobody wanted. He sat on an upturned crate with his hat pulled low and his sunglasses on, because the glare off the wet boards was the only thing he trusted in a season of grey.

Dolores from the ice cream kiosk came over with two teas in paper cups and set one on the crate beside him without asking. "You've been staring at that gull for an hour," she said. "It's a gull. It's not going to buy a brolly."
He didn't answer straight away. He was watching a younger man in a camel coat hold a tartan umbrella up to the sky as if it might confess something. The man had come back four times that week, always asking for the same thing: a plain black one, no name stamped on the handle, paid in coins.
"Some men buy umbrellas to keep dry," Mr Okonedo said at last. "Some buy them so they've got something to hide behind while they count the rain."
Dolores snorted into her tea. When the camel coat returned at closing time, Mr Okonedo handed over a black umbrella, took his coins, and wrapped the handle in brown paper. Then he slipped a yellow one in under his arm for free, folded tight, and said nothing about it. Next morning the young man was back on the pier with it open, grinning at the gulls, and the rain had finally stopped.
