Every prize has gone except the giraffe, a plaster thing with a lopsided neck and a pink bow glued on crooked. "She's not for sale, love," he says, which makes no sense, since the sign above him says FIVE RINGS, ANY PRIZE, in letters that have been repainted so many times they've gone soft at the edges.

You take the rings anyway. The first two skid off the bottle necks like wet soap. Your little sister Bev, nine years old and holding the torch, has fallen asleep on a hay bale with her mouth open. The third ring drops over the neck of the giraffe's own shelf and sticks there, wobbling, and the man sighs the sigh of a person who has seen this coming since Tuesday.

"Won it myself in Margate in 1971," he says, lifting the giraffe down and dusting its painted cheeks with his thumb. "Last night of the season. Gave it to my Pat. She gave it back the day after, said it looked like it needed a home that wasn't a glovebox." He turns it over, checks the bow, then hands it to you with both hands, like a man passing on a live bird. "She's had a few owners since. None of them stayed long enough to get a proper name for her."

By the time you reach the car park the rain has started, and the rides are folding into lorries one bolt at a time. Bev wakes long enough to see the giraffe under your arm and decides on Marjorie, which is apparently the only name a giraffe with a bow can have.
