Giraffe tattoo on a limb
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A standing giraffe in profile faces left, with its neck, head, ossicones and legs outlined in thin black linework. The spots are filled with stippled dotwork, and the body and shadow beneath the hooves use soft grey shading. The design sits centrally on the skin with plenty of blank space around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The well at Morrow Cross had gone dry in the third summer of the drought, and the herders said the water had simply walked off to find somewhere kinder. Ama Desta was sent after it with a waterskin, a flat loaf and her grandmother's blessing, which was mostly a warning about strangers. She walked east for nine days along the dry river bed, where the stones were white as bread crusts and the thorn trees stood bent like old women over a cooking pot.

On the tenth morning she came to a valley where the grass was still green, and in it stood a giraffe, tall as a doorway and entirely unbothered by her. It turned its long head and looked at her down the length of its neck, as if she were a late guest. Its spots were dark and deep, each one dotted in and shaded at the edges, like rain pressing into dust.
Ama held out the loaf. The giraffe considered it, then bent its neck low, lower than seemed possible, and touched the cracked place in her waterskin with its soft mouth. Where it breathed, the leather turned cool and wet. It did not speak, and she did not ask it to. When she shouldered her skin again it was heavy and sweet, and the giraffe was already walking away, its legs long and slow, leaving pale dust behind it that did not settle for a long time.
She found the well at Morrow Cross running full when she got home, and her grandmother, who had never once believed in anything she could not chew, said nothing at all. Ama filled the jars until dusk, then went out to look at the sky, where the last light caught the long shape of a neck above the thorn trees and went out as quietly as a candle.
