Small fawn tattoo on an arm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a standing fawn, shown side on with its head turned towards the viewer. The spots along its back and flank are rendered as tiny stippled dots, and the body, legs and ears are shaded with fine, delicate strokes. The piece is in black and grey, set against plain skin with a softly blurred interior background.

Nobody on the Kessar road agreed on the fawn's colour, only on its spots. Some said grey as dust, some said pale as a salt flat at noon, but every carter who had seen it counted the dots along its back and got the same number, which was the number of wells between the coast and the mountain.

Mahir Doun drove water to the mine camps for thirty years and never once saw it at dusk, which he put down to his eyes being on the road rather than the scrub. His daughter Setareh, who was nine and kept the goats, saw it first. She came back to the tents with her hands full of thorn figs and said it had stood on the rock above the well and turned its head to look at her, as if it were waiting for her to finish a sentence.
The old women said a spotted fawn that turns its head is asking the way. So when the tanker's pump failed at the dry bend, Mahir walked out with a jerrycan and his daughter, following small hoofprints that were not in the dust at all but on the stones. At the top of the rise the fawn was standing exactly where she had said, with its head turned back over one shoulder, waiting.
They drank from the seep it showed them, a hand-dug hollow no map had ever marked. Mahir filled the cans, and when he looked up the rock was empty except for a line of dots pressed into the sand, leading east, as if someone had counted them out for him one by one.
