Cartoon hamburger with music notes on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

A cartoon hamburger with large cartoon eyes and raised arms sits on the skin, with several musical notes floating above it. Bold black outlines and flat fills in orange, yellow, green and red give it a classic illustrative look. The tattoo is centred on the leg against a plain fabric background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The grill on Ada Finch's van had been hissing since six, and by eleven the burger on it had grown restless. It was a plain sort of burger, cheese melting down one side, lettuce the colour of pond weed, but it had opinions. When the busker on the bench outside the pier shelter struck up a fiddle reel, both its arms went up like a referee's and it began to sway on the spatula.

Ada told it to mind itself. Teodor, who had been playing for coins since Easter and had never been paid in anything but gulls' attention, sawed harder. The burger hopped down onto the planks with a soft slap, sesame seeds bouncing, and hoofed a jig between the bins and the chip fryer. Notes rose off the fiddle like steam, crotchets and quavers that drifted up and hung over the rail, and the burger reached for them one arm at a time, as though they were the last ketchup sachets in the box.

A crowd gathered. A small boy counted the beats out loud and got to forty before his mother hauled him away. Then, at the height of it, a string snapped with a sound like a dropped spoon. Teodor swore in a language Ada had never heard before. The burger stopped dead, arms still raised, and the whole pier went quiet except for the sea.

Nobody moved until the burger hummed. It was low and slightly flat, but it found the note the broken string had been holding, and Teodor, after a moment, picked up the tune where it had left off. They played until the tide turned. Ada sold nothing else that day, and when she shut up the van the burger was still on the grill, arms in the air, quite pleased with itself.
