Profile face and sunset on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line drawing of a face in profile, with a closed eye, nose and open lips, sits beside a half-set sun resting on several horizontal lines. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The design runs along the forearm against a dark background, with the face placed toward the wrist side and the sun toward the elbow.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the wet on the stones. Grandmother Ilse used to say the sea had a memory and kept whatever it was given, and I believe her, because the bay below Harrow Point has not given back a single thing since the water came up over the old road.

There was a ferrywoman there called Maren Vale, who rowed the last crossing from the drowned town to the hill settlement. She had a face like a closed door, long in the bone and quiet, and she spoke so seldom that people forgot she had a mouth at all. Every evening she stood in the stern and watched the sun go down behind the far water, and every evening it sank a little slower, as if it were tired of the same trick.
One night, in the year the lamps failed, a boy climbed into her boat with a box of seed and a question he had been carrying for a month. He asked her why she never sang. She said she had sung once, to the sun, to keep it from setting for good, and it had listened and stopped halfway down the sky, and nobody had ever thanked it for the courtesy. The bars of light on the water were its ribs, she said, holding it up.
He laughed, and she let him, and the sun finally slipped under with a sound like a page turning. Maren rowed him home in the dark with her mouth still open, as though the next note were waiting for permission. Now, when the water lies flat, you can see the hill lamps stretched across the bay in long bars, and that is the sun resting, as I was always told it would.
