Cartoon cat with pizza slice on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A chubby cartoon cat with a black outline and simple dot eyes holds a slice of pizza with yellow cheese, red pepperoni and a brown crust. The cat is filled with a flat peach and tan tone, with stripes on its tail and back. The design sits alone in the centre of the frame on pale skin, with a blurred metallic background behind the arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had shut the lane by four, so when the pizza lad came stumbling up from the cattle grid with two boxes held over his head like trophies, nobody at the Hollin Gate Inn thought to ask who had ordered them. We were eleven guests, one landlady with a bad hip, and Pudding, who had been sitting on the coat rack since Tuesday.

Pudding was the size of a cushion and had firm opinions about food. He waited until the lad was in the snug, shaking the wet from his hood, then dropped from the rack, crossed the flagstones at the pace of a man late for his own funeral and lifted a slice out of the top box with the neatness of a thief who had practised. Nobody saw him go except me. I watched him settle on the window seat, crust held just so, and pick off a pepperoni with one claw as if checking it for ransom notes.

I should have shouted. Instead I cut the rest into eleven pieces, which is what the lad had asked me to do, and carried them round on a tray. When I came back for the box, Pudding had left the crust on the windowsill, folded in half, the way a child leaves a note for Father Christmas. Outside, the snow kept coming down on the lane, and the lad's van sat under it like a sleeping animal.

Mrs Ashby asked where the last piece had gone. I said the cat had been hungry. She laughed until she coughed, then ordered another round, and we ate it on the stairs by candlelight, every one of us with a slice and not a word about the crust on the sill.
