Pizza slice with a "Pizza my heart" banner
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A pepperoni pizza slice with a curled crust sits centrally, crossed by a pink banner reading "Pizza my heart", with small pink hearts beside it. Script lettering reading "take another little" arcs across the top, and the bold black outlines are filled with flat orange, yellow, brown and red ink. The tattoo fills the frame against a pale background on a forearm.

The galley oven on the Morning Star was older than both of us put together, and it ran hot on one side only, so Nell Garrow had learned to turn every tray twice. She did it with a fish slice in one hand and a mug of stewed tea in the other, humming along to the shipping forecast as if it were a hymn. I was on washing-down duty that week and spent most of it finding reasons to stand near the hatch.

The pizza was a Thursday tradition nobody had voted for. Her dough was made from flour that had sat in the store since Lerwick, the tomato came from a tin, and the pepperoni was sliced so thin you could read the shipping notices through it. On the third Thursday of the trip she slid a slice onto a paper plate, pushed it across the steel table and said, 'Take another little, you look peaky.' I took it. I took two. The crust was blistered black along the edge and the cheese had gone the colour of an old brass fitting.
By the time we were hauling creels off the Fladen Ground, I had written the line on the back of a fuel docket and folded it into her oilskin pocket. It was a terrible line. Bosun Tam Hay read it over my shoulder and laughed so hard he dropped a crab. Nell read it later, alone in the galley, and I know because she came out with a face like the weather turning and handed me a plate with a heart cut from the cheese on top.
Back in harbour she never said yes or no. But the next Thursday there was a slice waiting for me on the hatch, and across the crust, in tomato paste, someone had written the rest of it: Take another little. Ferdy, eat up.
