Cartoon lion cub on a lower leg
Calf · Colour · Photo
A cartoon lion cub sits upright and faces the viewer, with a curled tail on the left and a raised front paw. The linework is bold and dark, with soft shading in orange, yellow and brown across the fur and a pale tan base on the paws. The tattoo fills most of the frame against a blurred outdoor background and a patch of denim.

By the third sun of the Harbour Reach fair, the cub had eaten two of your ration bars and was sitting on the customs desk as though it had been issued the chair. Its tail curled up behind it like a question mark that had given up waiting for an answer. You kept your hands flat on the counter. Ottoline Vance, the inspector with the cracked visor, kept one hand on her holster and her eyes on the small orange animal that refused to stop looking at her with such stubborn hope.

The manifest listed one item: a hand-painted companion, declared under dormant cultural goods. Nothing about it said it was alive. Yet when Ottoline leaned closer, it lifted one soft paw, the way a child does before asking for something it already knows it cannot have, and the bold black lines around its ears flickered like old film. 'Sealed skin-art,' she muttered. 'Those were banned when the last biocolour vats shut down. They're supposed to fade.' It had not faded. If anything it looked more pleased with itself each time the lights dimmed.
You asked it, quietly, where it wanted to go. It did not answer in words. It turned its head toward the shuttered window, where the old lighthouse still threw a faint amber beam across the water, and then back to you, with the patience a cub keeps for whoever finally understands. Ottoline sighed, stamped the manifest, and wrote a new line in the margin: passenger, not cargo. The cub hopped down, tail high, and trotted out ahead of you as if it had always known the way.
