Lioness head tattoo on a calf

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

A lioness head faces forward, with detailed eyes, nose and whiskers rendered in soft orange, brown and russet tones. Dark purple and brown strokes define the fur and ears, and loose, feathered edges give a watercolour-like finish. The design fills the frame on a section of pale skin, with a blurred green and red background behind it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had turned the stalls to dark wood by eleven, and the lioness on the side of Parr's flower van had started to run. Nell watched a thread of ochre slide from her eye into the gutter and swore quietly, because she had painted that face herself nineteen years ago and knew every feathered stroke of it. Water always found the hard edges first.

Old Parr came under the awning with two teas in chipped mugs and stood looking up at the van as if it might answer him. 'Her mane's going,' he said. 'Mane goes first in weather.' Nell took the tea and pointed out the dark brown strokes along the jaw, how they had been laid over a wash that was still wet, so the colour bled into the fur like smoke. 'You don't paint a lion,' she said. 'You let the paint decide where the hair is.'

He nodded slowly. 'Do the eyes last. Mabel always said the eyes were the only honest part.' Mabel had sold lilies from that van for thirty years, and in all that time, Nell realised, nobody had ever asked why the lioness looked so pleased with herself. She mixed burnt sienna with a bruise-purple from a crate of plums, dabbed the wet brush at the corner of each eye, and waited for the rain to ease.

When the last drop fell from the awning, the lioness was looking straight down the market towards the station, as if she had spotted someone coming home at last. Parr finished his tea, pulled his cap low, and walked out into the wet without once looking back at the van.
