Stormtrooper helmet on forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A Stormtrooper helmet fills most of the frame, drawn with fine black outlines and grey shading on the white armour. Loose blue, orange and yellow washes spread across the background and around the helmet's edges, giving a painted, splattered finish. The helmet is centred and cropped at the top, with the skin's surface and arm contour visible around it.

Sit nearer the grate, you lot, and mind the coal dust on your sleeves, it gets in everything. My mam told me this one, and her mam told her, and I'll tell it the way it was told to me, with the bit about the pit pony left in because she never could leave it out.

Nineteen twenty-six, the summer after the strike, when Tredwell pit had lost its third shift to flooding and nobody in Caerhys could afford a candle. A man came walking down the valley road with a helmet on his head, white as a boiled egg, and he didn't take it off for anyone. Blue splashes of sky hung behind him over the tip, orange like the glow off the coke ovens, and the children ran alongside him asking was he a knight or a ghost. He said neither. He said he was looking for the lamp-room.

He found it. Old Evan Pryce, who kept the lamps, swore the stranger knew the door without being shown, and that when he tapped the glass of the safety lamp it burned blue for the first time in living memory. They went down together that night, the stranger first, the pit pony snorting at the cage, and the water in the lower gate was up to the men's chests. The stranger never once looked back. He just kept walking into the dark, his white shell bobbing ahead like a moon in the drips.

By morning the water had gone down a foot and Evan's hands were shaking. The helmet came up the shaft on its own, on top of the cage, empty, and sat on the winding wheel. Nobody touched it. My mam says it's still up there in the shed, if you're brave enough to go and look, though I've never been and I'm not sending you.
