Colour tattoo of a grey cartoon robot hugging a brown beer bottle with a small red heart above, in a traditional style on the ankle.

Cartoon robot holding a beer bottle on an ankle

Traditional · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

A cartoon robot with a grey metal body and antenna stands beside a brown beer bottle with a yellow label, while a small red heart with a short line sits above them. The bold black outlines and flat, smooth shading give it a traditional cartoon look. Grey tones dominate the robot, with red, brown and yellow used for the heart, bottle and label, and the design sits on the outer ankle above a white sock and red trainer.

Rust had got into the portcullis hinges again, and Ferris Glossop, the last robot on the payroll of Harrowgate Castle, had been sent up the wall with a tin of grease and a grudge. Forty years of tourists had taught him that nobody read the signs. They read the battlements, photographed the moat, and asked him whether the ghost was in.

Below him, in the shade of the gatehouse, sat the bottle. Nobody had ever explained how a bottle of stout came to live in the bailey, only that a stonemason had left it there in 1979 and it had never once gone off. It had a painted face and a voice like a cellar door. It called Ferris "tin man" and he called it "Mr Dregs", and between them they had kept the castle running on spite and sarcasm for longer than the trust had kept its accounts.

On the morning the trust posted a letter about closing the east wing, Dregs was unusually quiet. Ferris climbed down, wiped his hands, and found the envelope on the cobbles beside the bottle, the paper sweating under its neck. "Heart's not in it," Dregs said. "Not any more."

Ferris set the bottle upright on the parapet, where the sun could find its yellow label, and went back to the hinges. He had never told Dregs about the small red heart the stonemason scratched into the mortar beside the gate, and he was not going to start now.
