Cartoon owl with heart-patterned chest
Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a cartoon owl with wide eyes, long lashes and curled ear tufts, perched with clawed feet. The chest and wings are filled with rows of small hearts, with a larger shaded heart at the centre. The drawing uses soft grey shading on white paper, and the image is taken at a slight angle with a dark background.

Dear Aunt Mavis,

You will not believe what has moved into the solar tower at Harrowgate Keep. Since the roof fell in, the only residents have been jackdaws and a man from the council with a clipboard, so I was quite put out when the owl arrived. She has enormous eyes, curled horns and lashes like a Victorian actress, and she looks at everyone as though they owe her money. The lads in the village call her Lady Pinch, after the tea shop she is said to have robbed.
Her real trouble is her chest. Every evening she pecks valentine hearts from the scraps the wind lifts off the fete field, and every morning she arranges them across her breast in rows, overlapping like fish scales. I counted four hundred and twelve on Tuesday. The largest she keeps at the centre, shaded so deeply it looks like a bruise on a plum, and she will not let anyone touch it.
Last Thursday the council man climbed up to condemn the tower. He stopped in the doorway, saw the owl, and read out his notice in a small voice. She simply blinked, slowly, one lash at a time, and he signed nothing at all. He went back down the stairs without a word, and I have not seen him since.
So the tower stands, and I have decided to stand with it. If you come up at Easter, bring string. The owl wants more hearts, and I think she has begun to like me.
Love, Edie
