Owl with heart and keys flash design
Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash
A drawn tattoo design of a barn owl with a large facial disc and dark eyes, perched in front of a red heart outlined in gold with a white banner across it. Two gold keys hang at the lower corners, and black ornamental swirls frame the figure. The owl's feathers and face are built from fine stippled dotwork shading and bold black outlines, while the heart and keys use flat red and yellow colour on a pale paper background.

Old Tobias Renn kept the signal box at Harrowby Junction for forty-one years, and for thirty of them a barn owl kept him company on the frame of levers. She came in through a broken pane the winter his wife died and never left. He hung a ring of brass keys from the nail above the lamp, one for each lever that mattered, and the lads in the goods yard said the owl had the best seat in the county.

The night the fog came down thick as wool, the Northern mail was due at nine. Renn dozed in his chair with his pipe gone cold. Mab screamed once from the frame, a sound like a key turning in a rusted lock, and he woke to find her perched on the points lever with her wings spread wide. Out past the platform the distant lamp had gone dark. He pulled the lever with his bad hand, the rails swung, and the mail came round the curve at a crawl, its driver's face white in the glass. Nobody thanked the owl. Renn said a warm perch and a mouse on Sundays was thanks enough.
When the company put in electric signals that spring, they sent a young man from Leeds with a clipboard. He took the keys off the nail and called them scrap. Renn said nothing. The next evening the young man found the keys back on the nail, polished bright, and a barn owl asleep on the frame with her face turned toward the clock.
The company took the box down the year after. Renn carried the keys home to his cottage in his coat pocket, and on still nights a pale shape still comes to the sill of the empty box, looking for a lever that is no longer there.
