Cartoon puppy in glasses on upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A cartoon-style puppy with large round eyes and oversized black-rimmed glasses stands face forward, with its ears up and front paws visible. The linework is bold and the body is shaded in soft greys, with darker tones on the glasses and around the muzzle. The design sits on the upper arm against a plain background, with a green top visible at the edge of the frame.

Biscuit had decided the man in the grey coat was lying before he had even finished saying good evening. The laundrette on Gulliver Street stayed open until six, and at that hour the only other customers were insomniacs, a taxi driver eating chips, and whoever had left something behind. Biscuit was a French bulldog with a bad temper and a pair of black-rimmed glasses from a jumble stall outside the station. Nobody in our flat believed he could read, but he sat on the windowsill every night at eleven, nose against the glass, staring at the bus shelter opposite as if the timetable owed him money.

The man left a canvas bag on the bench by the dryers and said he would be ten minutes. Forty minutes later the bag was still there, and Biscuit had planted himself beside it with the air of a customs officer. When I lifted the flap, there was a bundle of letters tied with string and an envelope addressed to a Mrs Irene Haskett at a number on Corporation Road, which, as far as I knew, had been demolished in 1987. Biscuit pushed the envelope towards me with his nose, then sat on it, which I took to be an opinion.
I would like to say I solved something clever that night. Really I just stood at the bus shelter in the drizzle, holding the bag, while Biscuit squinted up at the timetable through his lenses. At twelve minutes past four the night bus pulled in, and so did the man in the grey coat, running, his hand already out for the strap. He saw the dog, saw the envelope in my hand, and stopped dead under the orange light. Biscuit adjusted his glasses with one paw, very slowly, and waited for him to speak first.
