French bulldog head in line and shading
Geometric · Black and grey · Photo
A French bulldog's head faces forward with large upright ears, shown in dark outlines divided into curved and angular panels. Soft grey shading fills the eyes, nose and muzzle, while the cheeks and forehead are left lighter. The design fills most of the frame against a warm, reddish skin tone.

The snow has closed the lane again, so you carry the lamp to the back passage and let Marlowe decide where you will sit. He is the inn's French bulldog, a grey-faced old gentleman with lungs like a bellows and firm opinions about draughts, and he settles his square head across your boots as though you were the one who needed minding. Mrs Pryce is counting spoons in the kitchen. Somebody has already lit the second fire.

By nine the only guests are a drover called Tom Gorringe, who arrived with frost in his eyebrows, and a schoolmistress who has read the same page of her novel since supper. The wind comes off the moor in long hard shoves that rattle the sash. Marlowe hates the wind so thoroughly that he has forgotten his bowl of water, the stairs and his own bed, and stands instead at the front window, where his great ears rise like two folded letters waiting for the post.
You hear nothing at first. Then comes the bell, a single harness bell as thin as a fork against a glass, far down the road where no road should be. Marlowe is on his feet before you are. He does not bark. He presses his nose to the cold pane and waits, and when a lantern swings into view at the gate, Tom Gorringe is already pulling on his coat, because the dog has told him what the wind would not.
Mrs Pryce says Marlowe has never once been wrong about a horse. You open the door and the snow pours in over the mat, and the old dog goes out ahead of everyone, grey shoulders white, ears up, leading the cart up the drive as if he had dug the path himself.
