Dog portrait tattoo on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows the head and upper chest of a smiling, short-eared dog with a dark collar at the base. The fur is built up with soft shading and fine strokes, with the darkest tones around the eyes, nose and collar. The portrait sits centrally on a pale forearm against a plain background, with the rest of the arm and a dark top visible at the edges.

The lift in Harrow Court had been broken since the spring, so the dog took the stairs, all twenty-two floors of them, one step at a time with his collar jingling against the concrete rail. Nobody remembered who had given him the collar. The old woman on nine said it had been blue once, and the boy on fourteen said it had always been black, and they argued about it on the landings while the dog sat patiently and waited for one of them to open a door.

He had a habit of grinning at people who were crying. The postman learned this first, then the midwife who came up for the Abebe baby, then Mr Lusk, who had lost his wife in January and had not left his flat since. The dog would sit on the mat outside, tongue out, ears folded back like a pair of old envelopes, until Mr Lusk opened the door to shout at him. Then he would stop shouting and sit down too.

On the roof, where the wind came in off the reservoir and rattled the aerial, the dog could see the whole estate laid out like a map of other people's kitchens. He would sit at the parapet and look east, toward the hospital and the canal, toward the place where somebody's grandmother once told the children that good dogs wait at the top of the world for the people they love to climb up and find them.

Mr Lusk climbed up in October. He was out of breath and cursing, and the dog was waiting by the water tank, grinning as if the whole hard business of the stairs had been worth it.
