Mrs Tennant's windfalls had been coming down since Tuesday, and every one of them, I was sure, was meant for me. The wasps had found the Discovery apples under the old codlin tree first, which I considered a personal insult, so I sat down on the bottom step of the potting shed and let them know what I thought of their manners. Nobody answered. Nobody ever answers a pug who has decided to be grave about something, which is the only advantage a face like mine has ever given me.

Dad calls it my worried look. He says I was born into entirely the wrong sort of dog for a farm and have been fretting about it ever since. Maybe so. What I know is that the orchard in late August smells of cider that has started thinking about turning, and that the grass between the rows goes gold and warm and full of things that want chasing. I did not chase anything. I watched. Watching is the work nobody thanks you for.
On Thursday the boy from the village came up the lane with a bucket and a stick, and a girl with a red plastic camera who laughed at my tail. I held my ground through all of it. Half a bucket of apples went past my nose. I counted every one of them with my eyes, which are round for a reason, and I did not move once.
When they left, Mrs Tennant came out with a biscuit and found me exactly where she had left me, sitting upright in the middle of the path, looking as though I had personally prevented the end of the world. She gave me the biscuit. I accepted it with dignity. The wasps, to their credit, had the sense to go elsewhere.
