Cartoon queen bee with crown on a foot

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon bee wearing a gold crown sits on a pale blue wash background, with a large green eye, yellow and black striped body and small wings. The lower part of the design reads Queen D.E.P. in black lettering. Bold black outlines and soft shading give the piece a playful, cartoon feel, and the tattoo fills most of the frame on the top of a foot.

Dear Kieran,

You will think I have gone soft, but the hive is still on the roof of Harrow Court, and the council man came up the stairwell on Tuesday with his clipboard and his hi-vis, looking for the bees as if they were a fly-tipping offence. I told him the queen would sort him out. He did not laugh. Mrs Okafor from flat 41 did, and then she brought up a tin of shortbread, which is how we settle things on the ninth floor.

Your great-aunt Dot named the queen after herself, you know, though she always said the D.E.P. stood for Dearly EarlyPloyed, which was nonsense. She painted that crown on the lid of the first box herself, gold paint from a Hastings bric-a-brac stall, and the bees took to it. Honest to God, Kieran, they would circle that lid like it was a wedding cake.

The council man left a notice pinned to the lift. Two weeks. I have stuck it to the inside of the hive door with a bit of sellotape, and every morning I go up with a cup of tea and tell the queen about it. She just stares back at me with that great green eye, one lid lowered, as if she has already decided what happens next.

Come up when you're back from Leeds. Bring the good sellotape.

Love, Nan
