A cartoon strawberry character wears a black top hat, a monocle and a moustache, with arms and legs drawn in thin dark outlines. To its right is a burst of radiating lines and a sparkler-like shape with small green dots. The strawberry is filled with red and dotted with seeds, while the hat and moustache use solid black and grey shading, shown in a close, angled photo of the skin.

The strawberry had been fourth on the bill at the Ashworth Michaelmas Fair for eleven years, and Mr Pemberton still insisted he was the star. Every evening he strutted out of the tent flap in his black top hat and brass monocle, twirling his moustache for the children, while Dot the sparkler-girl stood at the far end of the field with her box of fizzing wands and waited for her cue. Nobody had ever told the strawberry that the sparklers were the reason the crowd stayed past dark.

On the last Saturday of September the wind came off the Pennines and tugged at the canvas until the poles groaned. Pemberton stepped out to bow, caught his top hat on the guy rope, and went down in the mud with his monocle flying off into a trough of cider apples. The crowd laughed. Dot did not. She tossed her wand aside, ran across the wet grass in her clogs, and knelt beside him, pulling the glass from the trough and wiping it on her sleeve.

He took it back with a dignity that lasted about three seconds. Then he looked at her and said, in a voice far smaller than his moustache, that he had never once been able to see the fireworks properly from the stage. She handed him a wand. He lit it, held it up beside his face and squinted through the monocle at the spitting gold lines, and for once the whole field fell quiet to watch him.
