Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A cartoon Hello Kitty character wears a green mohawk and a skull pin, holds a green electric guitar and makes a devil-horn hand sign, with two black star shapes beside her head. The design uses thick black outlines with flat areas of yellow, green, purple and red. It is centred on a forearm against a blurred background.

Mags had sworn the van would make Brighton by midnight, but at ten past eleven it was still coughing along the front at Hastings, and the drummer was asleep with his boots on the dashboard. The gig was in a cellar under a chip shop. Nobody there had heard of the band, which suited them fine.

Their singer was a small white cat called Kit, who had no mouth to speak of and sang anyway, through a guitar the green of old bottles. She wore a skull pin on her collar that her nan had sent from a jumble stall, and a mohawk she dyed herself in the sink every Sunday, lime and plum streaks running down the tiles. Two black stars stuck to the amp at her shoulder, cut from a sheet her landlady had thrown out. They had the bones of a good band and no sense of time.

The cellar held eleven people and a dog. Dennis, who ran the nights, paid in chips and a promise of a second gig that never came. Kit plugged in, tuned by ear, and played with the dog thumping its tail in time. Halfway through the third song the bulb over the stage popped, and in the dark the guitar glowed the colour of lime sherbet. Nobody minded the dark.

Outside, the tide had come up over the shingle and the front was empty except for a herring gull sitting on the bins. Kit stopped in front of it, lifted a paw and made the devil horns, the way she did for crowds who never came. The gull looked at her, unimpressed, then flapped off over the pier. Kit climbed into the van and laid the guitar across her knees. Mags asked where to. Kit pointed at the dark sea, and the van turned around.
