Cartoon unicorn trailing cupcakes on the lower back
Neo-trad · Back · Mixed · Photo
A grey cartoon unicorn with pink mane, pink wings and a golden horn is shown in profile, with a small pink-iced cupcake and two more below and behind it in a diagonal trail. The design uses bold dark outlines, smooth colour fills and soft shading on the body and wings. It is centred on a lower back with a partly visible tattoo at the right edge of the frame.

Hush now, and pass me that ladle, because the galley fire won't tend itself while I talk. You want to know why the Mariner's Joy limped into Valparaiso with no sugar in her hold and forty cupcakes stacked in the bosun's chest? I'll tell you, though you'll not believe a word of it, and I'll not blame you.

It was the grey month off the Horn, and the cook was a widower called Tobias Pell, who baked for the whole crew every Sunday because it was the only thing that kept the men from brawling. The sugar ran out on a Thursday. On the Friday, a unicorn came down out of the sleet and landed on the mainsail yard as neat as a gull. He was grey as slate, with a pink mane that streamed like bunting and a golden horn he kept polishing against his foreleg. His wings were pink as a cut ham, and he looked at Pell the way a magistrate looks at a thief.
Pell offered a bargain. There was no sugar left, but he had flour, butter and a tin of rose water, and the unicorn turned up his nose until Pell iced one small cake with pink frosting and set it on the rail. The beast gobbled it, sighed, and asked for three more. Pell made him a dozen. Off the unicorn flew with the tray in his teeth, and cupcakes dropped one by one as he went, laying a trail across the sky from the masthead to the bottom of the world.
Next morning the sea lay flat and every lost cake had been found, bobbing in the tide where a sailor's hand could reach it. Pell never saw the beast again, but a fair wind came up behind us for three hundred leagues, and the captain swore the empty tray was still tucked under the yard. Now eat your crust. The fire's going out and I've told you all I know.
