Cartoon whale spouting water on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small cartoon whale with a single eye and smile is drawn in thin blue outline, with a splash of spray rising from its head above it. The linework is simple and even, with no shading, and the blue ink stands out against the pale skin. The tattoo sits near the wrist on the inner forearm, with a dark sleeve at the top of the frame and blurred blue gloves in the background.

Nobody in Gullsby Harbour expected the whale to be small, least of all the whale himself. He was a grey-blue creature no longer than a rowing boat, and when he surfaced that first spring to blow he managed a polite cough, a few drops and a puff of spray that landed back on his own head. The fishermen laughed. Maureen Pratt, who ran the chip shop on the harbour wall, laughed hardest, then tossed him a bag of scraps anyway.

The children named him Dennis, and Dennis took it personally. All summer he swam out past the buoys at dawn, filling his lungs until his belly went round as a barrel, and every morning the spout came out smaller and more apologetic, a little curl of water like a question mark that someone had forgotten to finish.
Then in October the fog came down thick enough to swallow the lighthouse. Maureen's grandson Ellis was out on the bait boat with the engine dead and the bell on the buoy clanging in the wrong direction. Dennis heard it from the deep water. He rose under the boat and sent up a single spout, the tallest he had ever managed, and it hung in the grey air like a flag on a windless day. The lights of the lifeboat came crawling toward it, one by one.
Afterwards nobody mentioned size. Maureen painted a board for the chip shop wall that read DENNIS'S CORNER, FREE SALT FOR ANYONE WHO SPOUTS. Ellis still swears the splash was the height of a cathedral. Dennis, who has never once argued the point, rolls over in the shallows and does it again just to be sure.
