Animated woman with flowing hair on upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A cartoon-style woman with long, wind-blown dark hair looks to the side, with a red-brown leaf and a few falling leaves around her shoulder. The linework is smooth and the shading is soft, with gentle blending on the skin tones and hair. Colour ink dominates, with deep blue-black hair, warm peach skin, rust and red tones, and the tattoo fills most of the frame on the upper arm.

Right, sit down, the lot of you, and keep your coats on, because the lift has been dead since Tuesday and the heating's dead with it. Now. Every October the wind comes up the back stairwell of Calder House like it's late for something. It gets in through the gap where the fourteenth floor window used to be, and it goes round the landings grabbing whatever's loose: crisp packets, a child's glove, the red leaves off the plane trees by the bins.

There was a woman on the ninth floor called Marisol Dunn who had hair so long and so black it looked like somebody had poured the night down her back. She worked late at the laundrette on Harrow Road and came up the stairs smelling of hot cotton. Every evening she stopped at the landing window and let the draught lift her hair sideways, and she'd laugh at it, because the wind always wanted to take her somewhere she had no intention of going.
One October a leaf came up the stairs that was bigger than the others, rust at the edges and dark red in the middle, and it stuck to the shoulder of her cardigan. She didn't brush it off. She looked at the wind and said, you can have the rest, but this one stays with me. She pinned it on with a safety pin from her coat.
The wind took the rest that autumn, all of it, down the stairwell and out past the bins. The lift was fixed in November, and nobody thanked the council. Marisol still wears that leaf on her shoulder every October, a bit more faded each year, and she still stands at the window until her hair goes sideways. Mind the step on the way out, now. The wind's still hungry.
