Animated woman and red crab on thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a cartoon-style woman with long dark hair, red lips and a light blue top, turned towards the upper left. Around her are orange and purple leaves or petals, a small orange fish at the lower left, and a red crab at the upper right, all set against a blue water background. The linework is bold and the shading is soft, with smooth colour blends across the hair and water.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Tully had given the attic room to the sea air, and the sea air had given it back a crab. Dora found it on the third morning, sideways under the washstand, claws raised like a man refusing a bill. She fetched the broom, then the dustpan, then Mr Pascoe from the room below, who said crabs did not climb stairs and went up to look anyway.

The guests at Sea View were all trouble in their own way. There was a retired organist who played the same four bars of Chopin at breakfast, two sisters from Leeds who had booked a week and stayed a month, and a widow whose parrot could say only "tea" and "no". Dora had lived among them since she was fourteen and had learned that every house by the water kept one thing that did not belong: a cracked shell on the mantel, a net snagged on the gate, a stranger watching the headland from an upstairs window.

She carried the crab down to the harbour wall in the dustpan. A small orange fish that had been following its shadow along the lane flicked past her ankle and dived off the steps. Dora stood there feeling foolish while the tide came in over the stones and carried brown leaves across the shallows, turning them purple where the light caught them.

When she climbed back up, the attic window stood open and the curtains lifted like a sail. On the sill lay one leaf, pressed flat against the wood as if someone had set it there to be found. Dora picked it up. Somewhere below, the organist began his four bars again, and for once she thought they sounded like the sea.
