Pin-up Snow White and roses on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a stylised pin-up figure with dark hair, a red bow and a black corset bodice with a red and cream skirt, one arm raised above her head. She rests her other arm on a small tattooed arm, and a row of red roses with green leaves sits along the base of the design. The linework is bold and dark, with smooth shading on the skin tones and fabric, and the palette is strongly coloured in reds, black and cream.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The orchard at Carrow Hill had gone heavy that year, and the pickers were sleeping in the barn with their boots on. Old Mab Tennant sent her granddaughter up the ladder with a basket and a warning about the red-cheeked apples on the north wall, which nobody had planted and nobody would admit to picking.

The girl was called Nell. She had a black bodice her mother had cut from an old coat, and a red ribbon she tied in her hair whenever the harvest fair was near. She wanted to dance at the supper. Her grandmother said a girl who danced with one arm held up like that would draw the wrong sort of attention, and Nell said she had never met the wrong sort of man, only the sort who sold cider.

Then, as these things go, a stranger came up the lane with roses wound round his wrists and asked for the finest apple in the county. Nell gave him one from the north wall without thinking. He bit it, smiled, and said it was sweet as a promise. She laughed and climbed back up her ladder.

The supper went on without her. The fiddler found a tune nobody had heard before, and the roses along the barn wall bloomed a second time, out of season. Mab swept the floor and said nothing. Nell danced alone in the yard all night with her arm high above her head. In the morning the stranger was gone, the bodice hung dripping on the gate, and the north wall was bare of every red apple, with rose petals drifted in the grass beneath it.
