Pin-up princess with clock arm and banner

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

A stylised pin-up woman with pale blonde hair in an updo wears a navy strapless dress and a black choker, holding a small brown mouse on a white-gloved hand. Her arm carries a clock and pumpkin tattoo, and two swallows fly near her shoulder, with squirrels and mice among climbing vines and leaves in the border. Bold outlines, smooth shading and warm colour sit on a parchment-toned background, with the words Keep On Believing on a curled ribbon at the base.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had stopped trusting the tide clock on the Scrap Pier months ago, so she went by the swallows instead. They had roosted in the net loft all summer, and when they lifted off the rafters one by one before dawn, she knew the boats would go out on the ebb whatever the wind did.

Her grandmother's orange float hung on the bow of the Mab, painted so many times the scales had gone soft. Gran had always said a boat needed a bit of foolishness aboard to keep the sea honest, so the mice kept a biscuit tin in the bilge, and the squirrels, who had no business on a fishing boat at all, were fed off the stern rail each evening. Uncle Pete called it nonsense. Nell called it company.

The swallows were gone when she climbed down the ladder with the lamp, and the harbour lay black except for the lighthouse blinking out past the breakwater. She worked the mooring rope loose, felt the hull lift under her boots, and heard a small scrabble on the gunwale. A mouse sat there in the lamplight, looking up at her as if it had been waiting all night for someone to notice.

"Not yet," she told it, and it seemed to agree, settling down in the bow beside the float.

Behind her the pier clock, wrong for years, struck twelve, and for once it was right.
