Her mother had told her never to walk past the last oak, but Ada had heard the bells again, thin and far off, coming down over the bracken the way they did only on nights when the stars came out thick as salt. So she went. The path bent into the trees and the trees bent up into a hill, and there on top sat the castle, its towers pale as bread crust and its roofs the green-blue of a kingfisher's back, with a bridge of old stone arching across a dry ravine to meet her feet.

A gatekeeper stood at the arch, though he had no face she could keep hold of. He asked her one thing. What did she want most that she could not carry home? Ada thought of her father's cough, of the second cow gone lame, of the ache under her own ribs that had no name. She said, I wish for the thing I have never been given, and I will pay whatever you ask.
He nodded as if he had expected it. The bridge unrolled beneath her like a scroll, and along its edge the words rose up in gold: a wish is a... and the rest sank under the stone before she could read them. Behind her the forest closed. Ahead, a single window lit.
Ada climbed to it and found a candle the height of a child, already burning. Her task, she understood, was only to keep it lit until morning. She sat down on the cold floor, cupped her hands around the flame, and waited for the sky to pale over the trees.
