Castle and full moon on a upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A castle with multiple turrets and spires sits on a rocky mountain base beneath a large full moon. The castle is rendered in fine black and grey shading with detailed stonework, while the sky and clouds are softly graded. A dotted triangle outline frames the whole scene, and the image is a close photo of the upper back.

Dear Ruth,

You will think me mad, but I have finally seen the castle on Carrick Scar, the one Mr Halloran swore was only a drawing in an old atlas. We climbed the scree on the last night of the survey, Hollis with his theodolite strapped to his back and me carrying the lamp, and at the top the whole thing rose out of the rock like a set of pencil points. Eleven towers, I counted, and one spire so thin it looked as if it had been drawn with a single hair.
Hollis wanted to take a bearing at once, but the moon came up behind the keep and we stood there like fools with our hats in our hands. It was full and enormous, bigger than any moon I have seen over the Thames, and the cloud around it had been smudged by a thumb. I thought of the dotted lines we have been ruling all month on the chart, the triangle we walked from the valley mill to the ridge, and it struck me that someone had drawn that same triangle around this place long before us, to keep it honest.
Here is the part you will not believe. When Hollis finally sighted through the instrument, the crosshairs ran straight up the central spire and kept going, and there was no ground above it, only the moon sitting in the notch of the tower like a coin in a purse. He wrote the figure down as zero. I have not had the heart to tell the Society that the castle has no height at all, only a shape.
We leave at dawn. I am posting this from the inn at Dunmere with the map rolled under my arm, and I have drawn the castle in the margin exactly as I saw it, dots and all. Keep my chair warm.
Yours in haste, Tom
