Castle and Mickey-style head in a circle on a foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A castle silhouette with pointed towers sits beside a round head shape with two ears, set within an open circular arc. Vertical stripes rise behind the castle and run down the right side, all in solid black lines with no shading. The ink is black on pale skin, and the background shows red surfaces and a grey stool.

The coach lights come on at ten past two, and by the time you reach the third row, half the passengers already have their passports open on their knees. You take them one by one under the torch. A grey-haired man with a crossword folded to the corner. A girl asleep against the window, a plastic keyring cupped in her palm, its little castle and round-eared mouse face-out where the strip light can find them.

Your sergeant wants the coach emptied. Procedure, he says, because the manifest counted forty-three and the driver swears he's carrying forty-two. You stand at the door with the dog while the passengers shuffle down the steps into the cold, suitcases squealing over the tarmac behind them. The luggage hold holds a wheelie case full of tea towels and a tin of sugared almonds, nothing else.
The forty-third turns out to be the driver's mother, asleep in the toilet cubicle at the back, who has done this run for twenty years and never once been counted. You stamp her passport anyway, because the form says to, and the ink comes up dark and crisp across the grey security print.
When the coach pulls away, you find the keyring on the step, left behind by the girl. You turn it over in the cold and find a date from last summer scratched on the back. You slip it into your breast pocket, meaning to post it back at the next crossing, and you forget it there for three weeks.
