Crow perched on a branch on the wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black silhouette of a crow sits on a thin, twiggy branch that wraps around the wrist. The bird has a smooth, filled body with fine branch details fading into the skin at the edges. The image has a teal colour cast, and the hand is held in a loose fist against a glass surface.

The crow came aboard at Valparaíso in a basket of onions, and nobody on the Constance Vell would own to bringing it. Cook said it was the mate's. The mate said it had been watching us from the quay all afternoon, and I believed him, because it had a way of looking at a man as though it had already marked down what he owed.

It took to the mainmast rigging first, then the spanker boom, and by the third week it had settled on the same length of weathered spar every dawn, black against the grey like a stroke of ink that had forgotten to dry. Old Tobias Quill, who had rounded the Horn twice and buried a brother off Cape Stiff, said a crow that picks its perch and keeps it is a crow waiting for land. I told him he was a fool who'd been drinking his own gin. He only nodded and went back to his splicing.
Forty days out of Falmouth the fog came down so thick we could not see the bowsprit. We heard the surf before we saw it. Then the crow lifted off the spar, shrieked once, and flew straight into the murk, the way a man walks into a room he already knows. I took the wheel and steered after the sound of its wings, and when the fog tore open there was a headland of black rock a cable off our lee, and the bird sitting on a stunted thorn above the breakers, watching us go by.
We raised the Lizard by dark. Nobody thanked a crow, not in my hearing, but when I went up at first light the spar was bare and the wind smelled of gorse and cut hay. Tobias had left a crust on the rail for it, and by morning the crust was gone, and I have never been able to say which of us was the lucky one.
