Small lotus flower on a foot
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small lotus-style flower outline sits on the side of a bare foot, with a stylised letter or curl shape inside its centre. The linework is single-tone and thin, with little or no shading, and the ink reads as dark grey to black against the pale skin. The tattoo is placed low in the frame, with red painted toenails and a blurred salon background behind the foot.

The lamp-keeper's daughter kept a pot of lotus seed on the sill of the rock house, though nothing grew there but salt and sorrel. Every spring the tide-boats came in from the Brass Coast with cargo for the mill towns, and every spring the boatmen asked her why she bothered. She told them the seed had come from her mother's grave on the far bank, and that a seed carried over water would root wherever it was set down.

When the great storm took the Maudlin Star, the only boat to come back was the one with the new mate aboard, a thin boy named Ansel who could not swim. He had washed onto the sandbar with a curled brass charm in his fist, shaped like a bud with a loop in its heart. The keeper's daughter took it from him without a word, turned it over twice, and set it on the sill beside the pot.
The seed sprouted that week, pale and bent, and by midsummer it had put up one white flower on a stalk no thicker than a bootlace. Ansel stayed on the rock to tend it, because the sea had taken his berth and he had nowhere else to be. In autumn the flower closed for the last time, and the girl pressed its petals flat between two pieces of slate and gave one to him. He carried it inland with the charm, and that was the end of the boat, the storm, and the seed.
