Outlined lotus flower on the back of an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small outlined lotus flower with pointed petals sits above two small dots, all drawn in black ink. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the petals overlap to show the inner layers of the bloom. The photo is taken from behind the leg, with the tattoo centred on the ankle against a plain grey floor.

Rain had been drumming on the canvas awning for an hour, and Ruth Ashdown had stopped pretending the puddles would drain. She stood at the end of the flower row beside a tin bucket of cold water and a single clay pot holding a lotus bulb gone soft at the neck, its last leaf curled like a wet envelope. Nobody had asked about it all morning.

A boy in a yellow cagoule stopped, pointed at the pot and asked whether it was dead. Ruth said not yet, which was true. Lotuses kept their seeds in the mud for years, she told him, waiting for the right flood. She tipped two black seeds from a twist of newspaper into her palm to show him: hard, dark, no larger than peppercorns. He wanted both. She gave him one and kept the other, because her father had given her the same pair when she was nine and called them the only things on the market worth more than money.
The rain thinned as the stalls emptied. Ruth folded back the loose corner of the awning, poured the bucket into the gutter and carried the pot across to the window of the café opposite, where the afternoon light came through the glass and lay on the table in a long pale strip. She set it down there and rolled the seed between her fingers.
By closing time the leaf had uncurled and stood upright, its edges still ragged from the weather. The wet stone outside had darkened to slate, and the only thing on the market still holding a clean line was that pale green shape against the glass.
